A massive overnight assault by Russian forces on 28–29 November caused widespread power outages across Ukraine, leaving more than 600,000 consumers without electricity, according to Ukrainian officials.
Large-Scale Attack on Energy Infrastructure
The strikes targeted critical energy facilities in Kyiv, the surrounding Kyiv region, and several other oblasts. The attack involved a combination of missiles and explosive drones aimed specifically at power-generation and transmission systems.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy reported:
-
Over 500,000 residents in Kyiv lost power
-
More than 100,000 in Kyiv Oblast were left without electricity
-
Additional outages affected Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, and Poltava regions
Emergency shutdowns and scheduled rolling blackouts have been activated to stabilize the national grid.
Civilian Impact and Casualties
Besides damaging energy infrastructure, several missiles struck residential areas, causing casualties. Authorities confirmed at least three people were killed and dozens injured in the overnight assault.
Many homes, businesses, and public services were left in darkness. With winter temperatures dropping, the outages pose serious risks for heating, transportation, and essential services.
Restoration Efforts Underway
Ukrainian energy crews are working around the clock to restore power, though repairs in some areas are delayed due to ongoing security concerns. Officials urged citizens to reduce electricity consumption, especially during peak hours, to avoid further strain on the system.
Worsening Winter Situation
This attack marks one of the most intense strikes on Ukraine’s energy network in recent months. As winter begins, Ukrainian authorities warn that continued attacks on power infrastructure could deepen humanitarian challenges across the country.
